Everybody loves to dance; some are the brash dancers who can dance anywhere, anytime and some are the shy ones who like to dance in the privacy of their homes and then some need a few gallons of whisky or whatever their poison is, inside them before they can shake a leg. But, yes, largely, most people like to dance. Its the feeling that a lot of people get addicted to, heady endorphins that start acting up when you jive your body to the beats of your favourite song, something that either exercising can give you, or falling in love. Feels the same. And who doesn’t want more of what makes them feel good?
I don’t think I need to mention, I fall into the third category; blame it on my prim and proper conditioning and upbringing in a boarding school; girls like us never broke out into wild dances; we needed something to get us going! Needless to say, I love dancing too, though essentially with my kids, both of whom are big music and dance lovers.
So when my old friend, Yatan Ahluwalia, grooming consultant, columnist, also Partner & Chief of Operations of Y&E Consultancy Services, Editor, Pacific Area Travel Writers Association an affiliate of the UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organisation), asked me if I would take a personalised dance session, with his new company, You Can Dance, I did freak out a bit. Like I said, dancing for dancing’s sake, especially as a fitness regime, was something I was not sure about.
But then they say, never say never. That holds true all the time, for everything in life. So, there I was, holding my breath and trying very hard not to show my apprehension at the dance studio where I did land up, to YCD’s creative director, 23-year-old, young and dashing Pulkit Sharma, who’s not just good at the dance but equally good at counselling nervous dancers like me too.
Fifteen minutes of warming up, with low key dance moves and then jiving straight into the action with Pulkit, a very patient and fun teacher, removed my fears and by that time, I was having so much fun, I didn’t want the dance session to stop. The best part that I felt about this new dance form that Yatan and Pulkit’s company, is doing is that it’s exercising and burning calories and concentrating on all your body parts, along with the mind, and still feels like you’re having fun!
This new and unique dance routine gets you in shape. The gestures sculpt the body while giving both cardio and muscle toning benefits. It also burns calories and improves both your physical and mental endurance. A one-hour “Dance Wellness” routine can burn an average of more than 500 calories! The movements are fluid and graceful with an emphasis on overall wellness. At the end of the session, you feel recharged, refreshed, active and energetic. Unlike Zumba or a regular gym workout, the routine targets both the mind and the entire body: face, neck, hands, arms, back, legs, feet as well as isolations and breathing techniques – making the entire experience both wholesome and complete.
“Dance is important for your wellbeing and makes you feel just as good inside as you look on the outside,” says Yatan. Currently, they have a studio in Gurugram that caters daily to clients in the mornings and evenings and they are looking to set up centres all over the country as well. Group, personal and online training is also what they do, along with corporate workshops and others, that alleviate stress and foster bonding. Other services include wedding choreography, corporate training, private and group dance classes, choreography, flash mobs and Spotlight by YCD – India’s first multi-talent management agency.
Says You Can Dance, Creative Director, Pulkit Sharma, a multi-award-winning, young and talented ‘generation next’ modern and contemporary dancer, “Dance isn’t just an art form, but also a way to achieve overall wellness.” Pulkit has been dancing since the age of 14 and has explored and trained in various dance styles like Hip-Hop, Street dance, Bollywood, Jazz, Ballet, Contemporary, Urban, Wacking, Krump & Funk.
