When it comes to concept dining, the newly opened SOCIAL in Noida wins hands down. Though I must admit, I’m not too great a fan of theme restaurants because I feel it takes away attention from the food and can be an intimidating experience for diners. No-fuss places, clean lines with lots of sunlight and great food are more my kind of places.
That said, however, there are still a lot of people who enjoy restaurants like these. So we can live and beg to differ! And for me, what drew me here, was the fact that this SOCIAL, like their other outlets, all over the country is backed by originality, in terms of the theme, the decor and also the very robust menu with absolutely throwaway prices.
The newly opened Noida outlet is called SOCIAL Cinema and is really a tribute to the single-screen theatres of Delhi, though it can baffle the young generation of today. The old fashioned comfortable high backed chairs in the relatively dark, inside seating area with huge posters of classic movies with a projector and screen can actually transport you to that era. But hey, you don’t actually get to watch movies here, just your favourite music videos, as you gorge on their delectable fare.
SOCIAL’s food and drinks menu is the same like the other Socials but for a few dishes and it is largely a mix of Indian, Continental, American and Asian with some dramatic inventions, quirky names and fusion food that’s a winner all the way. The Social Avocado Toast, Pulled Mutton Samosa, Chaat Ke Gubbare, that I especially loved, are good starters with main course selections being the classic flavoured Chicken Wings, South Indian twist Momos, Stuffed Kulchas with Chole, the Butter Chicken, etc.,
What’s interesting is their popular Breakfast Trays (Big Apple, Bhai Style, Champions), the Tandoori Pizza and Epic Lunch Thalis (Gharwali, Chinjabi, Thai, Dilli Thalis among others). Big on portions, high on taste, low on price; everybody’s going to be happy here. Dessert can always be a choice between prosaic Halwa or the fun combo of Ramesh and Suresh. Don’t ask me what that is! Go and find out. At least, in this Insta eating age, you can always parade your sweet tooth’s interesting choice of name.
For the person who loves their alcohol with the food, just remember they haven’t got their bar licence yet and are procuring it on a daily basis so it would be better to call up beforehand to find out if they are serving drinks on that particular day. Take your pick of the bar menu, from the Longest Long Island Iced Tea, that sounds as potent as it really is or the Paan Pasand Shots or the Aacharoska (Caipiroska in a Pickle or Vodka with lime pickle!) As for me, I loved my Gin Toh Pagal Hai, that’s basically Gin with some fresh cucumber juice and other dazzling tricks they employ to make it so delicious.
Now, all that’s left is for the servers to metamorphose into turbaned fellas who will roll out the red carpet for you, as you walk in. SOCIAL, the restaurant, is all about getting social, as in what it used to mean once upon a time, with music, fun, food, friends, family and dining. Not what it is today, sitting with everyone around you, but glued to your phone. I have to confess, I didn’t check my phone too much, while I was here; there was much more to do.
Their motto is to take you offline while still keeping you connected, combining both work and play, in the same space. As Riyaaz Amlani, CEO & MD, Impresario Handmade Restaurants says, “With Social, we serve various kinds of communities in our spaces, and every community needs a Social.”
He could be right, as die-hard fans of the other Socials, would know.
