Just wrapped up Season 5 of Luther on Amazon Prime, that has four episodes. This time, Luther is hot on the trail of Dr Jeremy Lake, a serial killer with a penchant for fetishes and his wife, a psychotherapist Dr Vivien Lake who aids and helps out this tortured soul.
In between are interspersed scenes from the past which weave the pattern of the present day, present series. Tightly wrapped story telling that packs a punch and is the best so far than all the previous seasons.
This earlier series from BBC had a bit of fantasy sewn into it but this time, it’s pragmatic enough with lots of blood and gore, almost giving it the feel of a documentary.
Enter DS Halliday, the chirpy, newbie, who has a prominent role here as she takes charge when Luther is embroiled in cases that are largely personal in nature.
Alice Morgan returns and she is a very big reason for this particular season being excellent. Luther and Morgan together have an unbeatable chemistry, so much so that it stops mattering that she’s a psychopath!
We are almost drawn into sympathy and cherish her for the woman she is. That is, only, until the last scene where the glass ceiling is shattered and so is the idealism surrounding her. Luther in love? You bet.
